Motion Sensors
Difficulty Level
MediumIntroduction
Adding motion sensors to your system can help you keep track of what is going on in your home when you are away.
Important
Note: 12V devices, such as motion sensors, sirens and glass break sensors, require a 12V 2A power adapter. An example of one
can be found on Amazon here.
Motion Sensor Types
Your Voltsec Security System will support any hard-wired 12V motion sensor, but we recommend the Honeywell DT8035.
Wiring Diagrams
The hookup for a 12V motion sensor requires four wires.
- Black wire: Connect to (-) on the 12V power adapter
- Red wire: Connect to (+) on the 12V power adapter
- Blue wire: Connect to any available GPIO pin
- Green wire: Connect to GND (ground) on the Raspberry Pi
- Black wire: Connect to (-) on the 12V power adapter
- Red wire: Connect to (+) on the 12V power adapter
- Blue wire: Connect to any available digital pin
- Green wire: Connect to GND (ground) on the Arduino
Note
In this example, the main system board (Raspberry Pi) is connected to an expansion board (Arduino Mega) via I2C.
See our tutorial on Expanion Boards for more details.
